Individual and Family Support
Uncontrolled anger or emotional regulation challenges rarely affect just one person—they impact the entire family. Too often, only the individual experiencing anger seeks treatment, leaving loved ones with unresolved feelings. At Renew, we recognize the importance of addressing anger’s effects on the whole family. We offer both individualized therapy and a family systems approach, inviting family members (such as a partner or children) to participate when appropriate, creating a supportive space for shared healing and understanding.
Emotional Regulation Therapy: Individual Approach
Renew’s Individual Emotional Regulation Therapy offers one-on-one support for clients seeking to manage emotions and build emotional resilience. Our therapists draw from evidence-based strategies, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) techniques, and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy to help clients understand the root causes of their anger and develop effective tools for self-regulation. Through this work, clients learn to recognize connections between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, fostering resilience and lasting personal growth.
Conducted over 12 weeks, this structured therapy helps clients build emotional regulation skills and self-awareness. Since emotional regulation can be a complex, deeply rooted issue, the therapist may recommend extending counselling beyond the initial 12 sessions. Follow-up sessions may also be suggested to support clients as they apply these skills in daily life. This flexible, personalized approach enables clients to achieve meaningful and sustainable change.
Emotional Regulation Therapy: Family Systems Approach
For clients whose emotional challenges have affected loved ones, Renew offers a Family Systems Model. This approach addresses the wider impact of anger within the family by inviting family members—such as a partner or children—into the therapeutic process, when appropriate and with each person’s consent. Our aim is to create a safe, collaborative environment where both the client and affected family members can share their experiences, fostering mutual understanding and collective healing.
Renew’s therapists use evidence-based interventions, including cognitive behavioural techniques, restorative practices, and solution-focused therapy to help families improve communication, rebuild trust, and manage conflict constructively. This model moves beyond individual change, focusing on how each person’s behaviour affects the family as a whole. In joint sessions, clients hear directly from family members about how they’ve been affected, while family members gain insight into the client’s journey.
Where necessary, additional support may be recommended for underlying issues such as trauma or mental health concerns contributing to emotional challenges.
Screening Process
To ensure our services are a good fit, we begin with a comprehensive screening process. During this stage, the therapist will meet with the client and, when appropriate, consult with relevant family members or other professionals involved in the client’s care, including individual therapists, physicians, or attorneys, to gain a full understanding of the context.
Certain factors may indicate that Renew’s services are not suitable, such as unmanaged substance use that contributes to emotional dysregulation, unaddressed mental health conditions, or unwillingness to consent to necessary communication with relevant parties.
